Other People’s Influence

The people you associate with (work with, live with, spend time with, etc.) can have a profound effect on you and your life. If this effect is negative, then it behooves you to do something about it. In some cases, it may be time to reconsider being around the person. Sometimes that’s not very practical, and you have to do what you can to minimize how much they effect you.

Before you do either, you have to consciously identify just how each person influences you.

Becoming Irresistably Attractive

At*trac”tion, n. Webster’s Unabridged defines it as:

“An invisible power in a body by which it draws anything to itself; the power in nature acting mutually between bodies or ultimate particles, tending to draw them together, or to produce their cohesion or combination, and conversely resisting separation.”

There are a lot of examples of attraction in the natural world — from the simple physics of magnets and iron, chemical bonds, and gravity to the more complex behavior of plants growing towards the light and the uncanny worldwide popularity of David Hasselhoff.

It’s not surprising that there’s a very popular meme (”concept that spreads like
a virus”) around these days about there being some sort of universal “Law of
Attraction”. The idea resonates with most of us, as if it is a sort of “home
truth” that we all acknowledge, deep down.

Unfortunately, there appear to be more variations of the “Law of Attraction” than
there are IRS regulations.

Defining Success

Many of my clients have found that until you take the time to define success for yourself, it tends to be defined for you — and often not to your benefit. You end up chasing goals that aren’t really yours — ideas that you picked up growing up, from advertising, from the culture at large. As a result, people get the things that they thought would make them feel successful, and find that they don’t feel any different than they did before.

How Would You Describe Your Perfect Life?

What would you have in your perfect life? Who would be with you? What would you be focused on work-wise? How would you spend your recreational time? Where would you live? How would you live? Who would you be? Who could you become?

I have recently been working with several clients who are at that special time in life when they are ready to have a perfect life. And I do mean perfect, not just better. Not just easier. Not just great. Not just ideal. But perfect. Literally. In every area - family, work, money, health, enjoyment, fulfillment, happiness. All within 2 years.

Is Coaching for Everyone?

Nope. Excellence in your career and in your life is just like excellence in anything else. It takes work. Do the drills, get the skills. I can’t help a person who wants to learn through osmosis (these are the same people who buy every hot self-help book and think they’ll learn something by putting them on their shelf). But I can show them how to build and use motivation strategies that will work, if they actually try them.
Likewise, I’m not a therapist. I can’t help somebody who is so wrapped up in their personal problems that they don’t believe they deserve to become an effective person. But I can show them exercises that will get them over them and let them move on with their lives, if they are ready to learn them.
